Nederburg Charity Auction proceeds to benefit disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands
The annual Charity Auction, a highlight of the Nederburg Auction weekend, is a time for guests to bid with their hearts and not their heads; a time to go crazy and have fun while doing so.
The incredible generosity of donors and bidders has ensured that the funds raised since 1993 have made tangible differences to people’s lives and their wider communities. Every year producers, companies and numerous auction supporters are requested to give generously. This year is no exception and we are incredibly proud and grateful for the unbelievable donations received in support of 2018’s beneficiary.
To mark the 100th birthday year of former President Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) has been selected as this year’s beneficiary. The NMF’s work is an attempt to find sustainable solutions to critical social issues.
The Foundation, involved with Childhood Development programmes, will focus on programmes within the most disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands. One of its partners of choice,is the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) – a non-profit organisation founded in 1994 and committed to putting young children first by ensuring quality early childhood development for our country’s youngest citizens. The Centre for Early Childhood Development is already doing a lot of work with the most disadvantaged communities in the Cape Winelands.
CECD’s early learning projects have had very positive impacts on the communities in which the centre works in that they have improved the knowledge of community members in areas such as Early Childhood Development (ECD) and the importance of early literacy and numeracy for young children to enable them to grow up as literate and numerate individuals. CECD’s projects increases both employment rates and awareness around the importance of an early education, as well as enhances ECD teachers’ abilities to teach young children in an effective manner. Many of the CECD’s projects have a focus on assisting parents in the communities in understanding the significance of ECD for their children and furthermore aim to enhance their ability to teach their children in their home environments.
This year’s Charity Auction will be held on Friday evening after the pre-Auction tasting has concluded. This will be followed by a gourmet dinner prepared by celebrated South African chef, Bertus Basson. To ensure “top dollar” is achieved for each Charity Auction item, Roland Peens will again take up the gavel and oversee proceedings as auctioneer. Roland, a director of Wine Cellar, is one of SA’s best-known wine personalities and a highly experienced wine merchant. However, it is with gavel in hand where Roland comes into his own when raising funds for worthy causes. His dedication, authentic approach and enthusiasm in ensuring bidders leave with empty wallets and warm hearts is legendary.
Roland will be auctioning off some incredible lots generously donated by producers, companies and auction supporters. Some of the incredible lots include an exceptionally rare bottle of 1959 Chateau Margaux, a full-board safari for 6 at the exclusive Masungulo lodge in the Timbavati, A Nederburg sweet wine tribute to Nelson Mandela including 6 bottles of Edelkeur 1991 and 6 bottles of Eminence 1994, a fynbos and wine long weekend at Bartinney for 6 guests including a personal blending experience, a 6 bottle straight vertical Vin de Constance collection from Singita’s wine cellar amongst others.
